Anchorage, Alaska–Thousands of Alaskan’s struggle to put a turkey on the table this Thanksgiving. That is why the Food Bank of Alaska hosted the annual Thanksgiving Blessing in the Mat-Su Valley on November 23 and in Anchorage on November 26. Around 9,000 families were provided groceries and a turkey for a holiday meal.

Food Bank of Alaska is dedicated to eliminating hunger in Alaska by obtaining and providing food to partner agencies feeding hungry people and through anti-hunger leadership. Last year they distributed more than 7.5 million pounds – 6.2 million meals – statewide to 150 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers, and children’s programs feeding their hungry neighbors.

According to Jenny Di Grappa, Director of Donor Relations and Communications, “Food Bank of Alaska works with food industry partners to salvage food that would otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, wholesalers, producers, farmers, and the fishing industry. We also collect food donated by community members and administer government food programs…. We believe that no one deserves to be hungry.”

Food Bank of Alaska is asking for donations of canned, dried and frozen foods, milk and eggs, as well as commercially processed wild fish and game. In addition every $1 donated helps the Food Bank of Alaska provide three meals to Alaskans statewide.
